As you'll have more fun playing how you want to play This is only true if certain weapons are severely underpowered when it comes to end game. I'm not there yet, so I cannot comment.

You get a total of 34 points (IIRC - correct me if I'm wrong) per weapon throughout the game so you can't max out everything in a weapon skill tree. Best speedy weapons are dual hatchets, dual swords, tonfa, and kurigasama. Best heavy weapons are odachi and axe. The consesus seems to be that the best starting choices of weapon/spirit are Spear, Katana, and Isonade, not because they're good, but because they give you attribute bonuses that cannot be removed when you respec.
