Findings are based on data from the National Survey of Youth in Custody, which was conducted between March and December of 2018. This report meets the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (P.L. 108-79) requirement for the Bureau of Justice Statistics to rank facilities according to the prevalence of sexual victimization.
The Survey of Sexual Victimization (SSV) is part of BJS's National Prison Rape Statistics Program, which gathers mandated data on the incidence and prevalence of sexual victimization in adult correctional and juvenile justice facilities, under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108-79).
