I was all excited to listen to the mono version of the album, and I don't know if it's the mastering or what, but the mono version in the box set doesn't really sound all that great to me. I've been deep in a CAN hole the last few days leading me to seek out their live recordings. I'm finding it difficult to make sense of which recordings are out there both in officially released form and otherwise.The best sounding Nirvana Nevermind is the original 1991 CD recorded over a factory pressed David Bowie Let's Dance cassette. It's the first way I heard it-a friend made a copy &the intro guitar from Let's Dance smashing into the opening of Smells Like Teen Spirit sounds "more right" than any official version.Judging by the quality of the Mofi Year of the Cat CD I wish they had done a CD version of Time Passages.The Monarch's are slightly the best, in my experience. However, to me the Analogue Productions vinyl reissue is "the one" to have. Cut by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman, it overcomes many of the shortcomings of the vintage pressings. The sound is a lot more dynamic, and the aggressive tubey compression is not present.Probably sounds good, most Sundazed do. The original mono Atco Lp is tough to find.
