from what I recall, it's front-wheel-drive based, so when 4wd is off and there's nothing to slip on, it's 100% FWD. Then when the Patriot detects some slipping, it automatically sends up to 20-30% of power to the rear wheels, as needed. Or, you can flip the T-handle next to the handbrake and lock it in 50-50.

If it is intermittent, then there is probably a short in your wiring somewhere. If the light goes out, it doesn't necessarily mean that your 4wd isn't working ... if the transfer case lever is still in the 'engaged' mode.
