I tried missiles but they were destroying my own walls. With all 4 armed survivors on towers or platforms it is easy base defense, I say 4 because I have yet to recruit a 5th. You can force them into battle the same way as your survivors though. Draft them, then give them orders, the same as survivors. What I like to do is shift-click to give them a movement order.
