i think playing that encounter with 2 or 3 people, even though it obviously scales a bit, would do wonders to take some aggro off of you as a solo player and that would simplify it quite a bit. but having a few dozen enemies constantly spawning in and shooting at you everytime you spawn made this rather rough.

As a totally "average" Destiny player if I can solo the Legendary Calus fight anyone can! Witherhoard was my go to for many of the boss encounters in my Legendary completion but the Calus fight it became somewhat comical. As well, as muting the music. Turning the music off was a smart move for me.
